Best southern sweet tea recipe

My Father used to say this was the best "dam sweet tea he ever tasted." It is made with fresh mint and is refreshes like a cool breeze on a hot day. Like lots of things in life, a little patience makes for a better tea.

Best southern style sweet tea recipe

Ingredients:

3 family size black tea bags or six individual tea bags
1- 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 gallon of water for boiling
1/2 gallon of water chilled (will not boil)
1/4 teaspoon of baking soda*

Pour 1/2 gallon of water into stainless steel pot or teapot and bring to boil over the stove top.  Once the water has boiled pour into your serving pitcher and add 6 individual serving tea bags (3 if using family size tea bags) Add in 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda-do not stir. (The baking removes the bitter taste of the tea)

Set a timer for .15 minutes and remove the tea bags.  Do not squish the bags when you take them out. Add in the 2 cups of sugar and give it a good stir. Pour in the other chilled, 1/2 gallon of water, add fresh mint and stir again.  Place your sweet tea in the fridge and let in chill several hours.

This is a pretty sweet tea, you can use more or less sugar. Ice will dilute the taste so it is better to serve your tea chilled.  Get fun and southern fancy by serving in mason jars, with a garnish of fresh mint.
